The Green Roads Edward Thomas
Ages Pass Ring
“These many springs”
A small acorn set against a band textured like old oak bark.
The Story
Thomas loved what time leaves behind: in "Tall Nettles" it is a rusty harrow and an old elm butt, kept under the nettles "these many springs." This ring is cast in that spirit — a single acorn set against a band textured straight from old oak bark, every furrow and ridge carried into the metal.
The bark is oxidised dark; the acorn polished bright, like the dust on the nettles "never lost / Except to prove the sweetness of a shower." A seed of something that outlasts you — made to your size, and worn until its own edges soften.
The Poem
Tall nettles cover up, as they have done
These many springs, the rusty harrow, the plough
Long worn out, and the roller made of stone:
Only the elm butt tops the nettles now.
This corner of the farmyard I like most:
As well as any bloom upon a flower
I like the dust on the nettles, never lost
Except to prove the sweetness of a shower.
