A Bird Came Down Emily Dickinson

Came Down the Walk Necklace

“He did not know I saw”

A finch perched mid-note on a fine, fog-grey chain.

A small silver finch pendant on a fine chain, caught in morning light

The Story

It begins the way Dickinson's poem does — unobserved. A finch comes down the walk, mid-note, certain it is alone. We caught that single private second and held it in silver: the head turned, the throat full of song, the moment before it knows it is seen.

Worn at the hollow of the throat on a fine fog-grey chain, it sits where your own voice is. A small wild thing, kept close — the bird that did not know you saw.

The Poem

A Bird, came down the Walk —
He did not know I saw —
He bit an Angle Worm in halves
And ate the fellow, raw,

And then, he drank a Dew
From a convenient Grass —
And then hopped sidewise to the Wall
To let a Beetle pass —

He glanced with rapid eyes,
That hurried all abroad —
They looked like frightened Beads, I thought,
He stirred his Velvet Head. —

Like one in danger, Cautious,
I offered him a Crumb,
And he unrolled his feathers,
And rowed him softer Home —

Than Oars divide the Ocean,
Too silver for a seam,
Or Butterflies, off Banks of Noon,
Leap, plashless as they swim.
